One of the common data requests is for the business to ask IT for a dashboard on a certain piece of data. That type of request is usually motivated by a need to understand a certain aspect of business operations more clearly and to act more quickly and with greater confidence when certain conditions occur. For instance, this could be a request to understand how certain rebates and discounts cut into sales revenues, or to analyze travel spend relative to seasonal patterns. This often leads to a project cycle: The business gets the dashboard prioritized, time is spent on defining the various metrics to be shown, IT or consultancies pick up the task of implementing the tool, and eventually a dashboard is delivered. This process repeats, each step seems good and necessary, many dashboards are delivered…

Released today, a new survey commissioned by AtScale that surveyed more than 2,100 people offers results a whole lot closer to what those of us in the field encounter. This Summer, the lure of the open road (and cheap gas) proved too great, and we exchanged our usual vacation plans for a family road trip from Colorado to Wyoming. If you've ever planned an extended road trip, you know that flexibility is the key. It's not just about Point A or Point B, but all the points of interest in between. Some hotels we had booked months in advance; others we booked last minute as our plans changed.

By David Wiggin These days, whether they're in banking, retail or telecommunications, business leaders agree that "it pays to know your customer." But what about the world of healthcare, where health systems invest in doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics and supplies, with a laser focus on the delivery of care? Investment in a holistic view of the customer, or in this case the patient, is often forgotten. There are at least two reasons why it pays to know your patient: 1) to provide them with better health outcomes by closing the gaps in care and proactively helping slow the progression of disease; and 2) to "meet them where they live" by better understanding their wants and needs to improve engagement.

One of the most important challenges a company faces as it embark on a big data journey is hiring the right people for the right roles. But quite often, companies are faced a dilemma: Should they hire a chief data officer (CDO) or a chief analytic officer (CAO)? During a one-day summit next month, the International Institute for Analytics will give you clues to the answer. There are many difference between CDOs and CAOs, but the most important one involves the primary focus of each role, says Jack Phillips, the CEO and co-founder of the International Institute for Analytics (IIA), which is hosting the Chief Analytic Officer Summit (CAOS) on October 27 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. "The first distinction is a maturity level," Phillips says…

Guest blog post by Deepak Kumar Before going into details about what is big data let's take a moment to look at the below slides by Hewlett-Packard. So by going through these slides you must have realized that how much data we are generating every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day, of every month, of every year. The phrase that is really popular nowadays and also talks the truth: We have generated more than 90% of data in the last two years itself. And it is getting generated exponentially day by day with the increasing usage of devices and digitization across the globe. So what is the problem with these huge amounts of data? Earlier when common database management application systems were made those systems were built with a scale in mind. Even the organizations were not prepared of the scale that's what we are producing nowadays.
