IBM has unveiled its new z13s mainframe, which it claims offers encryption at twice the speed as previous mid-range systems, without compromising performance The company, which sold its x86 server business to Lenovo, continues to invest in new designs of its mainframe to handle new compute challenges. It launched in January last year, the z13, its first new mainframe in almost three years, with a new processor design, faster I/O and the ability to address up to 10TB of memory.

The cloud market shows no signs of slowing down, with 90% of enterprises planning to maintain or boost spending on cloud computing this year, according to a survey from Washington, D.C.-based research firm Clutch. The majority of enterprises in the U.S. said they would increase cloud spending in 2016, with 42% eyeing increases of between 11% and 30% and 14% looking to boost cloud spending by 31% to 50%. Another 7% plan to increase spending by more than 50%. Those increases are consistent with numbers from 2015, according to Alex Miller, an analyst with Clutch. "Businesses are continuing to expand into cloud services and operations," Miller told Computerworld. "More and more companies are either moving to the cloud or moving more operations to it. I think this will be a big year for the cloud and that should be the same for 2017."

The degree to which VCE will be able to upend a host of rivals that have created various types of appliances naturally remains to be seen.

SMAC is a fun little acronym conjured up to convey the concepts of "social, mobile, analytics, and cloud" that have been so prevalent and disruptive over the past decade. While healthcare has been busy dealing with the Affordable Care Act and the new ICD-10 coding system, business and industry have adopted SMAC full scale. As it happens, these technologies have an incredible amount to offer both healthcare providers and their patients — as well as medical researchers, administrators and other staff, and related services and industries (such as insurance).

It's's second acquisition within six months of a software vendor that can put its cloud computing platform to new uses. The last was Elemental Technologies, in September.  Nice is a niche outfit, with customers numbering in the hundreds, not thousands. Companies and research institutions in the aerospace, automotive, energy, life sciences and technology industries use its products to centralize HPC, cloud and visualization functions.

A quick intro to the cloud. In the beginning, there was no cloud and all software was on-premises and infrastructure sat on physical boxes. Then Jeff Bezos and Marc Benioff (Amazon and Salesforce CEOs, respectively) in their infinite wisdom invented software as a service (SaaS, in the case of Salesforce) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS, in the case of Amazon's Amazon Web Services business unit). The world would never be the same. Suddenly, organizations could acquire technology on demand and priced in an "as you consume" manner. Excitement abounded.

GUEST: Ever since Apple's Siri heralded the age of intelligent assistants (IAs) four years ago — followed by Microsoft, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook — pundits have complained that intelligent assistant technology isn't living up to its promise. The truth is that innovation in this domain, as in all technological domains, follows a predictable cycle and goes far beyond the big incumbents to include niche players (such as Nokia's Here, the intelligent mapping and navigation specialist that BMW, Audi, and Daimler bought for $ 3.1 billion several months ago).

Data stewardship is the act and responsibility of handling and managing data quality within an organization. Sometimes it's the job title of a single employee, other times it manifests as one of the responsibilities within the job description of another title — such as the CIO or the IT manager. Data stewardship might also be the prevalent philosophy in an organization, instead of a job description. However, data stewardship does require someone to be in control and others to follow their lead. Stewardship can't happen when data is continually mishandled.

Interesting to see this union of modern dance and computer imagery: It's not clear whether this is just pre-recorded graphics combined with well-timed choreography, or if the images are actually reacting to the dancer's movements. I suspect the former in this case (filmed in 2014), but recent advances in real-time motion detection should make true reactivity between dancers and the virtual environment possible. One of the fascinating things about watching a technology CEO run for office is the fact they never really seem to learn how to use the technology they sold. Before running for office both Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman ran companies that had impressive analytics capability, yet it was President Obama who used analytics to capture the presidency.
