Deep learning has become one of the most relevant trends in modern software technology. From a conceptual standpoint, deep learning is a discipline of machine learning that focuses on modeling data using connected graphs with multiple processing layers. In the last few years, deep learning has become a pivotal technology to power use cases such as image recognition, natural language processing, or even powering some of the capabilities of self-driving vehicles. The popularity of deep learning has expanded beyond just software and now the industry is starting to talk about the first generation of hardware with deep learning capabilities: a deep learning chip.

In the world of DevOps there are 'known good practices' — aka 'patterns' — and 'known bad practices' — aka 'anti-patterns.' Many of these patterns and anti-patterns have been developed from real world experience, especially by the early adopters of DevOps theory; but many are more feasible in theory than in practice, especially for more recent entrants to the DevOps scene. In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit at 18th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps Conference Chair Andi Mann, panelists discussed the patterns and anti-patterns of DevOps, and what it means to 'do the right thing' in a DevOps way, but in the real world.

Most people haven't heard the word, "gamification," even though they probably, and perhaps unwittingly, participate in it every day. Gamification is "the process of adding games or game-like elements to something (as a task) so as to encourage participation." Further, gamification is about bringing game mechanics — rules, constructs, processes, and methods — into the real world in an effort to engage people. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Robert Endo, owner and engagement manager of Intrepid Data, discussed how wearables, analytics, and geospatial technologies can be combined to transform the world into the ultimate game board. Organizations can grasp consumer, employee, or client intrinsic interest by setting up cool, collaborative, and rewarding systems using the IoT.

Microsoft took another step toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this gives Microsoft. Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly different for some of the configurations — I can't tell you how many nights I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different!

IT planning is an imprecise science that allows IT experts to increase the flexibility and agility of IT environments while reducing the bottom line. In an ideal world, where time and budget are not limiting factors, upgrading an organization's infrastructure happens on an ongoing, as-needed basis. In the real world, IT administrators have to make decisions about the hardware they put in place and how to maintain acceptable service levels over the course of the equipment's expected life. Most businesses do not have the luxury of replacing their current storage systems when IT demands outpace their current infrastructure.

A data breach could happen to anyone. Data managed by your company is valuable to someone, no matter what the data is. Everything has a price tag on the dark web. It is especially true when it is customer data, such as personal and payment card details. When your customers' data turns up somewhere unexpected on the Internet, you may feel the world is collapsing around you. People start tweeting about the hack, angry customers phone in, and Brian Krebs publishes his first article. Your organization switches to an emergency mode to handle the situation. It is the time when your incident response team takes control to put the genie back in the bottle.

Big Data engines are powering a lot of service businesses right now. Data is collected from users from wearable technologies, web behaviors, purchase behavior as well as several arbitrary data points we'd never think of. The demand for faster and bigger engines to crunch and serve up the data to services is growing exponentially. You see a LOT of correlation between "Cloud" and "Big Data" but on Big Data and "Hybrid," where hybrid hosting is the sanest approach to the Big Data Infrastructure problem.

Critical care decisions in modern day intensive care units (ICUs) are made every day by doctors who rely on decades of studies and clinical trials to inform them of the most effective treatments for these patients, yet the amount of evidence supporting clinical decisions remains extremely low. A recent study evaluated seven interventions in the ICU and found only one provided actual patient benefit, with the others having no effect or even causing harm. Thousands of medications and interventions are in regular use in the ICU, with an uncountable number of interactions among them.
